A licensed Canadian professional operating under a regulatory college — the kind of practice where client funds must be held in trust, drawn down only as work is earned, and reconciled on demand. They needed billing simple enough for a non-technical solo practitioner to run, yet compliant with strict trust-accounting rules, provincial tax obligations, and Canadian data-residency law. The incumbent vendors were predatory, which is what prompted building an alternative. The real problem: make strict compliance invisible to the user without ever letting it slip.
Built for how this practice's clients actually pay, rather than the card-first default the market assumes. Designed the compliance obligations into the system so the practitioner isn't the one policing them. Kept client data resident in Canada. Rejected: a design built around the wrong payment habit, a manual-first MVP, a cheaper vendor that wasn't a real processor, and convenient US-hosted defaults.
A compliance error here puts the user's professional standing in regulatory jeopardy, not just their books. The build treats that as the primary risk: the system enforces the rules and keeps a complete record, so correctness doesn't depend on the user remembering to be careful.

Compliance is enforced at every step rather than checked at the end, so a purchase the law does not permit is never offered in the first place. The visitor experiences it as a clean, ordinary purchase; the compliance work is invisible, which is the point.

A US consumer beverage brand in a regulated category being built in real time. The regulatory framework was only a few years old, the product's legal status differed from state to state, and there was no established pattern for serving a category like it at national scale — the compliance architecture had to be reasoned out rather than copied from anyone. The client had solved the product before asking anyone to sell it, and expected the same standard of the platform. One system had to serve four audiences at once: consumers buying directly, distributors and trade needing enablement material and certificates of analysis, press working a heavy announcement cadence, and shareholders expecting quarterly reporting. The work was awarded by competitive bid, won on architecture and compliance capability rather than on visual comps.
Put the compliance differences into the structure of the platform rather than into rules bolted onto a single site, so legal exposure stayed visible and auditable instead of buried in application logic. Brand and content stayed unified; the legal posture varied where the law required. Rejected: conditional logic nobody could audit at a glance, and treating compliance as a policy document rather than an architectural property.
In a regulated category the platform carries the legal exposure: ship the wrong item to the wrong place and the failure is not a bug, it is a violation. That meant enforcement had to be structural rather than procedural. The second risk was temporal — the company was moving quickly, and an architecture correct only for its present footprint would need rebuilding within a year.
The platform carried all four audiences without any one degrading the others. The company then re-engineered its entire regulatory position — replacing a state-by-state licensing problem with a national distribution problem — and moved from single-state operation to a multi-state national footprint with named distributors. The architecture absorbed it with no rebuild. The build outlasted the strategy that commissioned it, which is the only real test of whether an architecture was right.
Live federal data feeds interpreted into actionable flood-risk intelligence — Dauphin Lake basin, Manitoba
A large Manitoba watershed feeding beach communities, farmland and a fishery, where the last major flood is living memory and 2026 opened with a record snowpack. The only official picture was provincial PDF outlooks and raw federal gauge data no resident reads. The problem wasn't building a dashboard — it was turning existing public data into something a property owner could act on, in a season that looked like it might rival the worst on record.
Build on authoritative public instrument data, and stay useful when a feed fails rather than breaking. Express uncertainty honestly and tie each level of risk to a specific action a resident can take, revising publicly as conditions change. Complement the province, never impersonate it, and hold the scope tightly to monitoring. Rejected: a single point of failure, false precision dressed as a forecast, and unbounded scope.
Reliability under exactly the conditions that stress a network; accuracy that states its own uncertainty instead of implying false confidence; graduated guidance so the tool neither cries wolf nor under-warns; and durability that doesn't depend on anyone continuing to fund it.
A watershed with no independent monitor now has one place turning public data into plain-language, action-tied guidance. Through a record snowpack the basin held, and the tool made that calm legible in real time rather than leaving residents to guess. Good judgment here looks like nothing happening; the tool made the "nothing happened" visible.
